Firmware updates are included in macOS updates. To check for updates on your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down), then click Software Update.

And there is other way to update the firmware for Macs with older macOS versions like 10.12.6 (16G2136) Sierra now (current one is macOS 11 Big Sur), without updating its internal (or external) routine working booting disk with such older version, that I reported in this site, but could brick the Mac.
Thank you for writing about this issue, again. I have an iMac 17,1 with the original Apple 512 GB ssd blade that refuses to update its firmware. I have been trying to keep up to date on this problem, but had not known that some individuals had been able to get a resolution from Apple.
Apple may not have expected that some of their users were clever enough to figure out a fix on their own. So, they may be blithely going along thinking that firmware updates will never be applied going forward on 17,1 iMacs with SSDs. Is there a ticking time bomb in there?
Thank you.I think this is a simple bug in the firmware update installer, nothing more complex. It has affected other models, particularly for those who have replaced their internal storage. But more recent installers have coped better with those, but still not the iMac17,1.Howard.

If you want to learn about the details of each update before installing, click the arrow next to the Update button and review the apps, versions and installation date. Then click Update All or Update next to individual apps.
Click + from the global sidebar for common actions for a repository. Scan through the links in the navigation sidebar to see what's behind each one, including the repository Settings where you'll update repository details and other settings. From the Clone New dialog box, update the Destination Path to /repos/bitbucketstationsupplies. This destination path refers to the directory you just created with the folder for the repository. The Name field remains the same with the folder name of the repository.

Not wanting to sit through an OS reinstallation just for a firmware update, I tried running the installer on the command line. Turns out doing so skips the OS version check, so the installer ran without issue. After mounting the firmware disk image, this is what I ran in Terminal:

In 2020, Apple previewed macOS 11 Big Sur at the WWDC 2020. macOS can be updated using the Software Update settings pane in System Settings or the softwareupdate command line utility.
